Roles & Responsibilities

The Marine Superintendent will report to the Safety Operations/Quality Assurance General Manager. The incumbent will ensure the safe operation of ships and compliance to the statutory requirements of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.


The Marine Superintendent will assist in the implementation and upkeep of the Safety Management System; analyses risk and ensures compliance to the organization’s risk management framework. The Marine Superintendent will provide guidance to the Master on board for navigational matters and conducts incident investigation on board the ship, while promoting a culture of continuous improvement.


Key Responsibilities includes:

Compliance with International and Domestic regulatory requirements and legislations

  • Ensure ships always maintain class.
  • Ensure timely execution of surveys and certificates renewals and placement of documents on board.
  • Ensure ships comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Flag State rules and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance to International Safety Management (ISM) code, International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, (ISPS), Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) and International Standards Organization (ISO) compliance to minimize Non-Conformity Notes (NCN).
  • Investigation of international maritime conventions, domestic and foreign laws and regulations and measures to comply with them.


Supervise and Management of ships to ensure seaworthiness

  • Maintain Safety Management System (SMS) updates to ensure quality, accuracy, and efficient procedures.
  • Supervise and management of “Ship Security”.
  • Surveillance & monitoring of safe operation and cargo handling and Port State.

Supervise and Management of Marine Casualty

  • Initial response action in an emergency and coping with marine casualties.
  • Verification and instruction concerning measures to prevent accidents.
  • Handling of matters of accidents/near-miss and analysis of causes to prevent against future marine causalities.

Marine Practices and owners’ instructions

  • Management of marine techniques, navigational practices and instructions to seafarers.
  • Conduct briefings to seafarers on prevention of Marine and Air Pollution.
  • To instruct managed ships regarding implementation of owners’ special instructions regarding safe and efficient operation of the company & managed vessels.

Regular on-board internal audits

  • Safety, Security and quality/ ISO auditing for managed ships on a regular basis.
  • Ensuring / monitoring compliance with the ISM / ISPS Code.


Other duties related to

  • Safety and Health practices
  • Duties related to insurance matters, i.e. liaison with P&I club, COFR & CLC Certificates.


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation Degree (or equivalent)
  • Master Mariner Foreign Going Certificate of Competency Class 1.
  • Minimum 15 years of sailing experience and recent 7 years sailing experience in the capacity as Master / Chief Officer on foreign going vessels especially pure car carrier and container vessels.
  • A deep understanding of Pure Care Carriers vessels operations, and experience in Cargo Damage Prevention on board is preferred.
  • Understand and appreciate the commercial implications of vessel operations. Detailed and analytical, and have a safety, cost and quality conscious mindset. Open to change management and adaptable to a fast and versatile environment.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in English languages, both written and verbal, to perform in an international environment. Able to speak Filipino language is an added advantage
