Job Summary
We are establishing a new molecular diagnostics clinical laboratory in Kuala Lumpur. As a Senior Medical Technologist, you will play a key role in setting up and operationalizing the lab, ensuring regulatory compliance, and implementing high-quality molecular diagnostic services. The role involves both technical and supervisory responsibilities, including assay validation, workflow setup, inventory management, and mentoring junior staff.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead the setup of the new clinical laboratory, including equipment installation, workflow design, and documentation of SOPs.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams during laboratory setup and commissioning.
- Perform and oversee molecular assays (RT-qPCR, NGS and related workflows) from sample receipt to reporting, ensuring compliance with SOPs and quality standards.
- Lead method verification/validation studies to support assay rollout and regulatory submission.
- Ensure compliance with CAP, ISO 15189, and local Ministry of Health requirements, including documentation and audit readiness.
- Supervise and train Medical Technologists, ensuring competency and adherence to protocols.
- Manage laboratory inventory, procurement, and cost control.
- Maintain LIMS and electronic records with emphasis on data integrity.
- Perform shift duties, including occasional evening shifts and Saturday rotation, ensuring adequate operational coverage.
- Serve as point-of-contact for troubleshooting technical and workflow issues.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory operations and efficiency.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Lab Director or Company leadership.
Desired Skills & Competencies
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related field, recognised by MOH.
- At least 5 years’ experience in a clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory, with exposure to lab setup or new assay validation preferred.
- Hands-on experience with RT-qPCR, nucleic acid extraction, and molecular workflows; NGS experience is an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of quality management systems (CAP/ISO 15189), regulatory compliance, and laboratory accreditation processes.
- Prior experience in lab setup, commissioning, or expansion projects is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train junior staff.
- Strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Willingness to work occasional evening shifts and Saturday rotations.
