Role Overview
As the founding Mechanical Design Engineer, you will own the conception, CAD modeling, and industrialization of Optimus-style humanoid components. You’ll translate early concepts into robust, production-ready designs, guide prototype builds, and partner with suppliers to ramp tooling and volume manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Concept & CAD Modeling: Develop detailed 3D part and assembly models (plastics, sheet-metal, die-cast, composites) in CATIA or equivalent.
- Prototype Development: Drive rapid prototyping: oversee 3D printing, CNC machining, and initial fit-check assemblies.
- Engineering Analysis: Perform tolerance studies, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and kinematic simulations to validate stiffness, strength, and lifetime requirements.
- 2D Documentation: Create accurate production drawings with GD&T annotations and critical inspection call-outs.
- Design for Manufacturing: Conduct DFM reviews with contract manufacturers and tooling partners; refine designs for cost, cycle time, and quality.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work alongside electrical, firmware, and validation teams to integrate mechanical systems with sensors, wiring harnesses, and PCBA enclosures.
- Test Planning & Validation: Define mechanical test protocols, analyze failure modes, and iterate designs based on test data and reliability metrics.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical design for high-complexity electromechanical products.
- Expert proficiency in CATIA V5/V6; strong ability to produce both detailed parts and multibody assemblies.
- Proven track record with plastic injection molding, sheet-metal fabrication, and die-casting processes.
- Solid understanding of GD&T and the creation of 2D engineering drawings for manufacturing and QA.
- Experience running FEA simulations (stress, thermal, modal) and interpreting results to inform design decisions.
- Excellent communication skills to drive alignment with suppliers, cross-disciplinary engineers, and leadership.
