POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: NIGHT CARE STAFF
DEPARTMENT: RESIDENTIAL SERVICES
REPORTS TO: RESIDENTIAL CARE SUPERVISOR

Objectives of the role :
The Night Care Staff (NCS) are responsible for the safety and good behaviour of the residents at night and their awakening, breakfast and transportation to school in the mornings.
The Job:
Resident Management
1) Nights: Ensure residents remain in their beds, are safe and behave:
- At 10pm the designated IC takes over the staff telephone, Daily Occurrence Book and keys from the duty PM staff
- Monitor dormitories to ensure that the youths do not roam around at night and head to bed.
- Conduct random patrols of all units at least once an hour and update and record any unusual happenings in the Unit & Daily Occurrence Books;
- Ensure all residents are present, in their beds and asleep.
- Ensure lights are off and toilets are locked.
- Open toilets for any residents in need (but only one at a time);
- Look out for and report any signs of danger or misbehaviour including suspicions of physical, emotional or sexual abuse; residents not in their units/beds or found sleeping together in the same bed; residents using or charging electronic devices at night (handphones, gaming devices); any other forms of misbehaviour or refusal to follow instructions in a discipline report.
- Monitor any other residents in sickbay at least once an hour to ensure that they remain in their designated sleeping area at all times and update and record any unusual happenings in the relevant occurrence books;
- Ensure residents are safely evacuated during a fire alarm.
2) Mornings: Ensure residents wake up, eat breakfast and get to school safely:
- At 5 am the NCS hands over the staff telephone, Daily Occurrence Book and keys to the Residential Care Supervisor at House of Mercy
- During the week prepare breakfast at 5 am for the residents every morning in the kitchen and bring up to the units. During the weekends prepare breakfast and wake up the children going on Home Leave;
- Act as transport assistants on the morning (6.20 am) bus trip to the schools. Ensure that the children buckle up and behave;
- Conduct guard post duty between 7 and 8 am noting down all the children, adults and vehicles leaving or entering the compound;
- Help supervise and manage the residents who remain in the Home until the Houseparent take over at 8am.
Candidate Requirement:
Academic & trades qualifications
- At least GCE ‘N’ level
- Well-versed in English and a 2nd language (Chinese/Tamil/Hindi/Malay)
Work experience & skills
- Able to stay awake and alert for long hours at night.
- Able to relate to, supervise and manage children & youths
- Good interpersonal skills & able to work as a team with the other night staff
Desirable
- Has experience working in a child-centred work environment
- Certified in first-aid skills and able to practice first aid skills in times of emergency (training provided)
Personal qualities & behavioural traits
- Able to work flexible hours and upon last-minute minute notice
- Can work independently without supervision
- Physically fit to patrol dormitories & handle irregular sleep hours
- Strong morals & ethics and a commitment to children
- Has a pleasant disposition and good working relationship with other the staff
