Part-Time Lecturer for IN6238 Human-AI Interaction
We are seeking a part time lecturer to teach the course IN6238 Human-AI Interaction.
The course is offered in the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information's Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) programme. IN6283 examines how humans interact with artificially intelligent systems, with a focus on social, cognitive, and ethical dimensions of these interactions. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents increasingly exhibit autonomy, adaptivity, and the appearance of intentionality, the nature of human-machine interaction demands new conceptual and practical frameworks.
Drawing from cognitive psychology, students will explore how humans perceive, trust, anthropomorphize, and sometimes over-rely on machines—insights essential for shaping responsible AI behavior. From HCI, students will engage with frameworks for interaction design, usability, feedback loops, and expectation-setting—modified to suit dynamic, non-deterministic systems. From AI, the course introduces the logic and limitations of large language models, recommender systems, and learning agents, with an emphasis on their communicative and social properties.
The course bridges theory and application through design thinking, prompting students to develop AI interfaces and experiences that are usable, trustworthy, and ethically aligned. Students will learn to navigate trade-offs between system autonomy and human control, personalization and privacy, efficiency and explainability. They will also consider the sociotechnical implications of deploying AI in public and private settings. By the end of the course, students will not only understand how to design for AI-mediated interactions, but also why such design must be grounded in transparency, fairness, and shared human values.
The preferred candidate should have either experience teaching at the graduate/undergraduate level or relevant industry experience and have knowledge of the topics covered in the course. The course format consists of a three-hour weekly session that comprises lectures, tutorials and/or seminar discussions. The instructor will be responsible for leading each three-hour session in addition to syllabus planning, class preparation, marking for assessment and student consultation.
