The Principal Design Engineer (Structured Cabling) will be managing and mentoring teams on large scale projects, alongside industry experts with overall responsibility for the technical content and accuracy of team output.
Overseas travel is required with this role.
- Leading a project team of consultants and other key stakeholders to include clients and suppliers to ensure that all projects are delivered in alignment with company expectations and standards to include being delivered on-time and within budget.
- Provides feedback and supports consultant team to aid their personal development.
- Undertakes a hands-on client facing role in the development, design and coordination of telecoms infrastructure.
- Develop and specify ICT infrastructure and structured cabling designs within a variety of building environments.
- Surveys tests and reports on existing installations.
- Specifies activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
- Day to day decision making on project progress and direct liaison with and provides advice to client.
- Represents company at technical meetings with customers, professional teams and contractors' teams.
- Carries out engineering calculations to ensure drawings meet required robust industry and legal standards.
- Validation and checking of designs and specifications.
- Acts in an ethical manner and follows the principles of the Ethics Charter and Ethics in Practice Guidelines.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable management skills and prior experience of managing technical project teams in a structured cabling environment.
- Ability to prioritise own workload and the workload of others to achieve deadlines.
- Practical experience of the design of ICT infrastructure and structured cabling systems and their installations.
- Extensive experience of structured cabling systems and physical infrastructure design.
- Solid knowledge of key Health and Safety issues and legislation.
- Ability to use IT based calculation and spreadsheet software.
- Good understanding of BS-EN standards.
- Able to clearly communicate design intent or other technical arguments as part of client facing role. Clear (written as well as oral) communication skills.
- Competent in specification design/drawing for various building types.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. You must be confident and feel comfortable conversing on the telephone, via email and face-to-face as well as to be able to write concise reports.
- Good general IT skills to include use of a range of MS applications Word/Excel/Outlook/Teams.
- It is imperative that you can demonstrate that you have a good attention to detail and enjoy problem solving technical and non-technical issues.

- As the role is predominantly home based the candidate must have a suitable permanent 'home office' space from which they can work and communicate effectively including participation in visual and audio communications without interruption.
Desirable Skills and Experience
RCDD / CDCDP qualifications, CAD experience, knowledge of wireless networks, telephony, in-building cellular enhancement, Security, Networks, AV, EPMS, BAS smart building technologies as it applies to overall lCT design.
