The purpose of this role is to manage risk identification: model & portfolio assumptions and market inputs, pricing issues, and drive understanding of the design and utilization of Value at Risk, Stress Testing, and Scenario Analysis for the Oil Trading business in Singapore. This role will also identify, develop, and implement systems efficiencies and reporting capabilities for the risk books, partnering with other team members to align best practices across the Global Trading business in Shell. This role will report into the Risk Manager East Oil and support other Products businesses outside Singapore, where applicable.
What's the role
The Senior Oil Market Risk Analyst is responsible for ensuring that day to day risk management activities surrounding the SIETCO T&S Oil (with main focus on Refined Products) organization is executed in a controlled and professional manner including:
- Ensuring all trading activities remain within mandated exposure and risk limits.
- Ensuring all exposures are properly recorded using established fair value methodologies.
- Ensuring a daily commentary is produced analyzing daily/monthly P&L performance.
The role is expected to have Market Risk oversight over the T&S Products businesses, specifically in ensuring there is appropriate control and understanding on the identification, valuation and exposure reporting for the various Trading desks, and where required, provide event-specific additional monitoring (e.g. IMO 2020/Russia-Ukraine Crisis etc), or act as a Focal point for a major Market Risk initiative (e.g. system changes). You'll be working closely with the larger Risk Organization to ensure trading risks and returns are fully understood, captured and challenged where necessary. This will also include longer term risks, inherent in contracts such as, but not limited to, storage, pipelines, time-charters.
This role will also work closely with risk leads from all parts of the risk management spectrum including a significant Shell Business Operations component. The incumbent is tasked with ensuring that the SIETCO T&S Crude/Products business is widely understood and that any changes to it or the supporting risk management framework are communicated properly to all stakeholders.
What we need from you
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Mathematics, Accounting, Engineering or IT
- Strong business analysis skills, modelling capabilities, research and problem-solving skills, computer skills, technologically oriented
- Self-starter, highly motivated, results oriented, manage own work with limited supervision
- Team player, good interpersonal skills flexible to work across numerous time zones with both Market Risk teams in other locations, but equally the Shell Business Operations Centre in India.

- Capable of being independent from front office; able to objectively analyze and report risks and exposures
- This is a role for a person who brings diversity of thought, who is not afraid to speak up and who is comfortable challenging senior stakeholders and carry out an advisory role.
- Experience in energy trading risk management systems will be an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Risk Identification and Assessment: Identify and evaluate market risks related to trading activities in refined oil products, including price volatility, supply and demand fluctuations, and geopolitical factors.
- Risk Management Strategies: Advise on the development and implementation of risk management strategies and hedging solutions to mitigate potential adverse impacts on the trading portfolio. Ensuring all trading activities remain within mandated exposure and risk limits and all exposures are properly recorded using established fair value methodologies. In addition, timely intervention/discussion with desks regarding their VAR levels, stress & scenario tests and understanding of their desk hedging strategies and portfolio split between physical and speculative trades is an essential part of the role.
- Market Analysis: Connect with Teams with Shell which conduct comprehensive market analysis to support trading decisions, including fundamental and technical analysis of market trends, historical data, and forecast models and use that knowledge to advise on the markets.
- Reporting: Support periodic and/or Quarterly Risk Committee and Quality of Earnings discussions with senior management with detailed risk reviews of the portfolio, highlighting key risk exposures and recommended actions.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with traders, analysts, finance, and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective risk management practices.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and internal policies regarding market risk management.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify areas for process improvement and implement best practices to enhance the effectiveness of market risk management functions.
