Overview:
The Performing Arts Instructional Assistant is primarily responsible for working with teachers who teach music. The Instructional Assistant will need to be organized and efficient in providing clerical support to the department and keeping music libraries and various inventories up to date. It is expected that the assistant will attempt to meet each teacher’s needs equitably. Staff will strive to keep the assistant's workload balanced and reasonable. It should be further understood that although the list of responsibilities is multiple and varied, unexpected emergencies or circumstances may arise that require the aide to perform other duties as assigned by the Department Coordinator of Visual & Performing Arts.
Responsibilities:
- Serving as an instructional support (e.g., leading a sectional, help student struggling with music, co-facilitate an activity, or model) for both traditional music ensembles (band, choir, and strings) and popular music classes (including ukulele, guitar, and music production), as well as helping with setup and resetting of learning spaces.
- Supporting the technology needs of middle school music classes, including assisting teachers and students with digital recording, music editing, video editing, and more.
- Assisting with poster and concert program design, layout, and printing. Supporting as needed to concert and event preparations throughout the academic year, including music concerts, dance shows, and drama productions.
- Assisting music teachers with updating, revising, and maintaining the music libraries, instrument inventory, AV equipment maintenance, helping with instrument repairs, etc.
- Helping with the design, set-up, and take-down of various bulletin boards in the music area.
- Performing general support for the middle school music teachers, including photocopying.
- Ensuring compliance with all school’s policies and procedures as related to the job responsibilities of this position.
- Relating courteously and effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and community patrons as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (When necessary on Saturdays or in the event of responding to emergencies)
Work Hours:
- 7.45am - 3.30 pm: Regular MS school days
- 8:30am - 4:30 pm: Days with MS show rehearsals
- 10:30am - 6:15 pm: Days with MS productions and events
Qualifications Required:
- Diploma in music, the arts, or design from a recognized Polytechnic or equivalent
- Ability to read standard music notation.
- Ability to play a string or wind instrument preferred.
- General clerical and typing skills required.
- Computer skills in all Microsoft Office applications with an interest and ability to learn new music and arts-specific programs such as Noteflight, Sibelius, and Adobe InDesign, as well as Apple-specific Digital Audio Workstation software, such as GarageBand and iMovie.
- Desktop publishing skills are highly beneficial, but not required.
- Good English communication skills, both written and oral.
- Positive work attitude and initiative-taking.
- Ability to work cooperatively and provide assistance as necessary to students, teachers, and other members of the learning community.
