As a senior member of the product development team, the Senior Design Engineer will drive mechanical design efforts from concept through to production. This includes enclosure design, material selection, design-for-manufacture, and validation. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams and external partners to ensure product performance, reliability, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Design Leadership: Lead the mechanical design of embedded products, including enclosure design, thermal and structural considerations, and integration with electronics.
- Product Development Lifecycle: Own the mechanical development process from concept through prototyping, testing, validation, and production launch.
- Design for Manufacture: Develop and document manufacturing procedures. Optimise designs for injection molding and other high-volume production methods.
- Material and Process Selection: Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, focusing on plastic components and scalable production.
- Manufacturing Preparation: Collaborate with vendors and manufacturers to ensure production readiness and support setup of manufacturing processes.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with systems, electrical, and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical components.
- Mentorship & Oversight: Provide technical guidance to junior mechanical engineers. Review designs, establish best practices, and ensure consistent quality. Quality & Reliability Assurance: Lead mechanical validation efforts, including environmental testing, stress analysis, and failure mode evaluation. Support regulatory submissions.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related discipline.
- 5 – 8 years of experience in mechanical product development, preferably in embedded systems or consumer electronics.
- Demonstrated experience taking at least one product from concept to market; ideally two or more.
- Strong expertise in plastic part design, injection molding, and DFM principles.
- Experience developing manufacturing documentation and working with external vendors.
- Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) and mechanical simulation tools.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and lead mechanical efforts with minimal oversight.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in regulated environments.
- Familiarity with optical systems or sensor integration.
- Experience in a startup or fast-paced product development environment.
- Knowledge of environmental testing standards and reliability engineering.
