The Role
The role of Manager, Underwriting & Claims Services, Protection, APAC is to provide high quality underwriting and claims assessments and support key underwriting and claims related activities within the underwriting and claims team in the APAC region covering SEA, India, China and Australia.
As a Manager you will be working closely with the AVP, Underwriting & Claims Services, Protection, APAC to develop and implement an underwriting proposition that meets both client needs as well as being consistent with PL Re’s strategic focus.
Additionally, as a Manager, you may be expected to assist with the development of a high-performance team responsible for delivering high-quality expertise that adds value to insurance partners.
Client Referrals
- Provide high-quality assessments of client referrals in line with agreed risk philosophies, exercising judgment to ensure work is conducted within SLAs. This includes approving referrals that exceed the assessor's delegated authority.
- Continuously challenge current practices and improve processes and documentation.
- Leverage all aspects of Chorus (PLRe’s UWC case assessment system), including portal and cross-regional working, to further optimise underwriting and claims activities.
Team Management
- Lead a team of direct reports, utilising appropriate resources, networks, and tools to ensure delivery against plan, while providing performance management, technical development, and coaching.
- Ensure that the team meets their defined goals and objectives by providing support and facilitating collaboration within specified timeframes, achieving key results.
- Develop and foster a high-performance culture by setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and encouraging continuous improvement and innovation.
- Champion, role model, and encourage a culture in line with PL Re values and behaviours.
- Recruitment focuses on ensuring the right people are matched to roles and the team culture.
Client Auditing and UnderwriteMe Rules Auditing
- Audits plans are developed and audits conducted accordingly, including providing support for client activities such as quote due diligence and new client onboarding.
- Participate in, lead, or approve external audits, including the preparation and execution of reports, and the tracking and completion of audit actions. Audit actions include the review and planning of future audits, case referral criteria, cedant authorities, and other related activities.
- UnderwriteMe rules are audited to ensure alignment with risk philosophies and to identify opportunities for improving STA and/or risk selection.
Internal Governance, Training, System Enhancement, Ocean Development
- Maintain awareness and understanding of relevant regulatory changes and their impacts on the insurance and reinsurance markets.
- Maintain knowledge of and contribute to the regular maintenance of risk management policies.
- Identify role-relevant knowledge gaps within the team and deliver appropriate training to ensure all identified gaps are fully addressed, resulting in a more skilled and knowledgeable team.
- Lead or serve as SME for Chorus, with responsibility for continuous efficiency gains and user testing of new functionality.
- Support Ocean development work, including client engagement regarding risk philosophy changes and client-requested enhancements.
- Provide informal and formal mentoring/training to develop team members and may supervise the work of others.
Client Engagement and Training
- Utilise our deep understanding of clients' businesses and market differentiators to enhance relationships through engagement and training, ensuring client loyalty and satisfaction. Leverage this knowledge to strengthen client partnerships, positioning PL Re as market leaders.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Knowledge
- Typically educated to at least degree level
- Proven experience working in a life underwriting and claims department in an insurance or reinsurance company environment including experience at a senior level
- Experience handling underwriting and/or claims for all major products
- Good working knowledge of Life insurance industry regulations
Leadership Skills
- Strong management/leadership background
- Track record of leading and developing high performance underwriting and/or claims teams
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills
- Able to demonstrate a proven track record of proactive decision making
- Ability to establish objectives, and build, develop and lead a team towards these objectives
Commercial Judgement
- Strong analytical skills combined with sound judgement and commercial awareness
- Proven ability to ‘think outside the box’ to derive new and innovative approaches to underwriting and claims problems
- Ability and desire to communicate with business customers at all levels across the business and to work well within a team environment
- Organised, conscientious, and deadline focused with an attention to detail
- Ability to manage competing demands and deal with non-standard and unstructured requests, at short notice
- Motivated to take ownership of work and to seek further responsibility
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience working in a life reinsurance environment is preferred
- Proficiency extracting, manipulating, analysing, and drawing conclusions from data
- Experience with automated underwriting and/or claims systems
Risk Management Responsibilities
The Manager role has responsibility to support the AVP with risk management which includes but is not limited to.
- Assisting to foster a culture of risk management in the team through training and increased awareness
- Where relevant, report and effectively manage issues and/or loss events as they arise
