About TUMCREATE
TUMCREATE is a multidisciplinary research platform of the Technical University Munich (TUM) at the Singapore Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE). We are joining forces with universities, public agencies, and industry for the advancement of future technologies.
Our large-scale food science ‘Proteins4Singapore’ program is funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF). The Technical University Munich (TUM) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) join forces with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI) to research plant-based proteins.

Overview
The objective of this position is to support research activities in the metabolomics work package of the Proteins4Singapore programme. The selected candidate will contribute to the characterization of polyphenol profiles along the food digestion pathway – from raw materials to gut microbial fermentation. This role directly supports the programme’s broader goal to specify functional aspects and identify the mechanisms of beneficial food-microbe-host interactions, providing insight into their potential health advantages for the Singaporean population.
This internship can either be a full-time 3 to 6 months (paid internship between SGD 1400 – 1600 per month or SGD 10 per hour) or 6 months (thesis project). For part-time basis, at least 2 – 3 hours consecutively per day for about 2 – 3 days per week, is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in sample preparation, extraction, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis of food and fermentation samples
- Support targeted and untargeted metabolomics workflows for polyphenol analysis
- Preprocess and interpret LC-MS data in collaboration with senior researchers
- Maintain accurate lab records of procedures and results
- Contribute to the study of beneficial food–microbiome interactions relevant to Singaporean consumers
- Participate in lab meetings and inter-group research discussions
- Prepare technical reports or a thesis (for Bachelor’s or Master’s students) summarizing findings
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a Diploma, Bachelor’s, or Master’s program in life sciences, chemistry, biotechnology, food science, or a related field
- Basic understanding of analytical chemistry or metabolomics, especially LC-MS
- Familiarity with lab techniques (e.g., pipetting, solvent/media preparation, sterilization)
- Data analysis skills (e.g., Excel, R, or Python)
- Prior experience in LC-MS-based metabolomics or microbial fermentation is a plus
- Interest in food–microbiome interaction and functional food research
- Good organizational and communication skills
Additional Information:
This position is ideal for students seeking hands-on research experience in metabolomics, food science, or gut microbiome research, and may serve as the basis for a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. If you are passionate about sustainable nutrition, functional foods, and working on innovative food-health solutions, we strongly encourage you to apply!
