PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Senior Journalist, you’ll lead the BBC’s streaming output and iPlayer curation during UK overnight hours, working closely with a journalist based in Sydney. You’ll respond to breaking news, plan upcoming streams, and ensure timely, high-quality content reaches global audiences around the clock. Your role will be central to maintaining the BBC’s presence on digital platforms overnight, helping shape how international audiences experience the latest news stories as they unfold.

Working closely with colleagues in Sydney and the UK, you’ll identify live video opportunities and respond to breaking news. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Lead BBC News’ streaming output during UK overnight hours, collaborating with a journalist in Sydney to select and curate live and on-demand content, including weekend shifts on rotation.
- Produce high-quality live streams using News Channel output and other sources, ensuring engaging coverage for iPlayer and BBC News live pages.
- Curate short-form news clips from BBC bulletins and News Channel content, creating compelling thumbnails and ensuring editorial compliance.
- Prepare and plan upcoming streams for the UK team, updating content prospects and ensuring a smooth handover.
- Supervise the Sydney-based journalist and work closely with News Channel colleagues in Singapore to strengthen collaboration and identify live video opportunities.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Strong editorial judgment with knowledge of compliance, BBC Editorial Policy, and media law across digital platforms.
- Proven experience producing live and non-live news content, with a solid grasp of newsroom systems, tools, and workflows.
- Deep understanding of how audiences engage with video on streaming and digital platforms, using analytics to inform content decisions.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment, working collaboratively across teams to deliver high-quality output.
- Excellent multitasking skills, with the ability to manage shifting priorities and respond effectively to a changing news agenda.
